First programme – Leprosy Control Programme

On 1st July the first patient Mr. Sivanandan from Venjaramoode admitted

Shoe making unit started. In November a team from St.John’s Hospital went to Pollampakkam Hospital, Tamilnadu for training programme in order to get oriented with the Leprosy work.

Arch Bishop Benedict Mar Gregorios

In the early 1960’s there was a leprosy clinic at Koppam run by the CSI church. The programme of the clinic was carried out under the Christian Missionaries by Miss Dunn from England. In the beginning of 1963 Miss Dunn was looking for some agency to carry out the work and meet Late Arch Bishop Benedict Mar Gregorios of Happy Memory who was the Head of Malankara Arch diocese and he agreed to carry this noble work & extended his whole heart support for the work. That was the beginning of St.John’s Health services, Pirappencode.

Late. Bishop.Lawrence .J. Thottam joined the Health Services as – The First Director of St.John’s Health Services from 1963-1976

Sisters of Imitation of Christ and Little Sisters of Jesus together took up the Community Services of the centre.
